Having survived the Battle Of The Atlantic in WWII, I recently became engaged in The War Of The Shirts. On the left is Shirt No. 1. My daughter, (the one who is wont to rant), told me that if she saw me wearing Shirt No. 1 again she would rip it off my back. (her exact words, I swear). I could see nothing wrong with the shirt. After all, it did everything a shirt is supposed to do. (cover the naked torso). And as for the style, does it differ much from Shirt No. 2? I think not. Having grown up in the dirty thirties, and, living up to traditional Scottish frugality, I like to get full value for my money.

However, fearing violence, I hied to the nearest haberdasherie. We don't have a Moores in Yarmouth so I went to Walmart, Zellers, and finally settled on Marks Work Wearhouse where I purchased Shirt No. 2. (and a pair of pants), displayed on the right.

Does it matter that Shirt No. 1 is 27 years old? My daughter thinks so. Do you?

Iceland, Then and Now

For several years I have comtemplated revisiting Iceland, where I served during the war. Living up to his name, Traveling Man visited Iceland, 63 years after doing wartime service there with the RCAF. This view was taken from the water storage facility for the City of Reykjavik, mounted on a hill alongside the airport. It was taken by Ragnar Ragnarsson, a friend I had met on the Internet. In the background is the airport from which our squadron operated. From a restaurant at the top there is an unlimited view in all directions.
My trip to Iceland proved to be even better than my expectations. Ragnar and I spent an entire afternoon together. He took me to all the places I wanted to see and gave me a tour of the city and surrounding area. Although there is nothing left of our wartime camp site, remembered by Americans as Camp Kitcherbellaikin, and renamed camp Maple Leaf when we took it over from them, I took some pictures at the cemetery nearby where nine of our Squadron casualties are buried.
My visit ended with a bang. I didn't expect to be treated to a 6.3 scale earthquake. However, I was already at the Keflavik airport waiting for my departure time, and the tremor there was barely noticeable. Susan, (the name Nannan had not yet been coined), heard that goat's milk was very nutritious. So she decided to get herself a nanny, (goat). Here it is, tethered to a stake in the pasture. The problem was, she didn't know how to milk it. So she invited me over to give her a few pointers.

Now, I had no experience milking goats, although I had milked a lot of cows while growing up on a farm. A job we often referred to as "pulling tits". (never once, in my years on the farm, did I hear a farmer refer to those things as "teats). But I thought the principle must be the same so I agreed. Unlike milking a cow, which is done from the side, a goat is attacked from the rear. As I leaned over to do the job, I remarked to Susan, "I never thought I'd ever stoop to this".

Unfortunately, the goat project didn't pan out. Apparently the kids were not enamored with the taste of goat's milk. So poor Nanny lost her job. However, during her short stay, she aroused quite a bit of interest, as shown by her admirers here.

I've got the car, so there!

(follow-up on tuffysmom's blog)

Somebody's been eating my hamburger. I have accumulated 13 trays of slides, each tray containing 140 images. Since my projector broke down recently I needed to find some way to make use of the pictures. When I saw a scanner with an feature allowing the copying of slides at a reasonable price, I took it home. Since them I have spent hours making copies.
Here is a picture I took at a cemetery near Marville, France. Hundreds of skulls, and a stack of arm and leg bones stacked up against the wall on the left. Kinda gruesome, eh? To get things underway, the first rock was thrown by Guy Hemmings. Guy is a very popular curler from Quebec, a fan favorite of those who have watched him live or on television. I was asked to hold the broom for the ceremony and two of our junior curlers were the sweepers.
Guy and two assistants were touring Canda for the Canadian Curling Association to promote the sport. They were visiting all the clubs in the area, working with local curlers. A reception was held at the club where he signed a lot of autographs and had his picture taken with many of those present.
I wore my vintage curling sweater for the event, one I knitted myself over forty years ago.

Life and times of a cat

My name is Kayla. She's long and lanky, but not very brave, and is often bullied by Shania.

Shania is at the head of the feline pecking order and bosses both the other cats. All these cats have one characteristic. They are lap cats. When visitors arrive, they won't be sitting long before one of the cats will jump up on their laps. This is fine if the callers are cat lovers, but that's not always the case. Shania often keeps my lap warm while I'm watching TV. Fireguy seems to be the favorite of the other two.
Anyway, I hope everyone has a nice time over the long labour day weekend. Cheers.

All Decked Out

OLD DECK
The old deck looked fine, but a while ago I went through one of the deck planks and when replacing it, I noticed the sills underneath were rotten. You have heard of the eventful weekend from another source, corn boil, barbecue with big meal, etc. I had a picture of the dark cloud as it rapidly approached while we were barbecuing, but it wouldn't load until I entered all the text.

Then presto, it worked. With it came a big wind which blew the barbecue out, along with lots of rain. It didn't dampen our spirits much though.
As for Tuffy, he wouldn't be in plain sight when it was time to go home. Among his animals, would he have had room for a pair of all the sorts of dinosaurs, wooly mammoths, etc? We know such creatures existed. It would take a lot of feed to keep all those animals alive for 150 days until the water went down.

Adam and Eve: Who did Cain and Abel marry to perpetuate mankind? Din0saurs once roamed the earth in Alberta, and when they came to an end that same area was covered by ice. I believe that the Earth was hit by a huge meteor which knocked it off its regular orbit and that spelled the end of the dinosaurs. Areas once tropical became polar regions covered by ice. Remains of a wooly mammoth have been found in Nova Scotia.
I believe that Earth will be hit again by a huge meteor and will undergo another big change. It must have sprouted from a seed which had lain dormant for over fifteen yeats, and then decided to sprout.

Gardening and Stuff

Last year the forsythia bush to the left was a dead loss. But this year it is loaded with blossoms which are not quite yet if full bloom.

There is a story behind the tomato plants shown below. There was small square in the corner of the back yard where I had piled grass clippings last year. The grass had died so I decided to dig it up and plant some tomatoes. At Anthony's fruit stand in Dayton I asked "S" for some advice on which kind to buy. Now, "S" is the same person who approached me a long time ago, saying that if I ever intended to sell my place in Dayton, she wanted first chance to buy it. I agreed. Later on, when I decided to move to town I held up listing the place until she had her chance. It turned out she only offered about half of what I wanted for it. She still apologises for inconveniencing me. So she gave me the tomato plants, free of charge. She even threw in some pansies as well.

The tomatoes grew alright, and although they produce lots of blossoms, I have yet to see a tomato. The buds just fall off. Maybe there's a jinx on them. My green thumh seems to have lost its touch. Anyway, they were free, so I can't complain

I planted the pansies out front where they have a lot of competition from the other flowerw.

Hair today - gone tomorrow

A story about growing old. It was because I have been a fan of Rolf Harris since watching him on TV many years ago. I had often wondered what happened to him. Apart from his talent as an entertainer, I didn't realize that his stature as a painter was such that he would receive the honour of doing a special portrait for the queen's 80th birthday.
However, durig the sittings for the portrait, the casual conversation carried on between the two of them showed the queen as real, genuine person.
It was very interesting to watch as his first random brush strokes gradually brought the picture to life, even to the final touch-up to make the strings of pearls look so real. I wish now that I had taped it so that I could watch his majic again.
If Michael reads this, does his name pop up in Australia once in a while?

The Queen, by Rolf

When I saw the television listing, The Queen, by Rolf, I decided to check it out. I had a hunch it was by Rolf Harris, the Australian artist and entertaineer, famous for his "Tie me Kangaroo Down, Sport" song. Sure enough it was. It showed the whole process of the painting, including the two sittings by the queen. It was interesting to see her in such an informal setting, with quite a lot of chatting between the two as he worked. He even selected the dress she was to wear for the painting. What a talent he has.

The portrait, commissioned to mark the monarch's 80th birthday, is said to be an "impressionistic", rather than a "photographic", representation.

When he started by daubing big random brush strokes of colour on the canvas, it didn't look like anything. and it was very interesting to watch as the picture came to life.

The program showed the unveiling of the finished portrait at Buckingham Palace. I'm glad I watched it.

A Tree Grows In Westville

Barely visible near the point of the yellow arrow is the Westville Spruce when it was just a baby.

The Westville Tree

This is the last picture I have of the tree mentioned in tuffysmom's blog. So when I found a bare spot in a corner of my lawn, I decided to plant a garden. The grass had died where I had piled the lawn clippings last year and the ground was bare. So I dug it up and put in four tomato plants. Don't laugh, they're growing just fine.

If you plant a tree, you can change that small bit of landscape for years to come.
Over seventy years ago, in a time known in the West as the dirty thirties, many sloughs dried up due to drought. Dust storms drifted the soil like snow in the winter. The government decided to help farmers by providing trees with which to build windbreaks. When I suggested we plant a one around our house, Dad was reluctant to plow up a strip of land to do it. He said, " It will just blow away".
Finally he agreed, and I went to work. From seed I planted a row of caraganas, a hardy bush used usually for hedges, around the outside. Next, along the north side I used cuttings from trees which lined a neighbor's driveway. The rest was filled in with trees from a government nursery in Saskatchewan. Seen above, indicated by the yellow arrow, is a satellite view of those trees, surrounding the old house. A few days ago, I set foot there again, where once we played as barefoot kids..
The whitish areas in the image are wispy clouds between the satellite and the earth.

Wanna fight?

Cole Liam Firth

I have 8 Grandkids. Last night I stayed up until 1:30 AM trying to get out a blog. It was to have a picture at the top, some text under that, and some more text.
The first image came out great, and I added some text. Then I wanted to place another image under that, thinking it would be placed where my curser was. It wasn't. It was at the top of the blog, above the first picture. This, of course destroyed the sequence. I tried to cut snd paste. No luck. I couldn't even get rid of the top picture.
After about three tries I gave up and went to bed.
This morning I asked Fireguy how he did his. "Cut and Paste" he said.
I started a test blog, inserted a picture, then another picture, and tried to get the second one under the first. It wouldn't cut, so, of course, had nothing to paste.
I tried the keyboard shortcut for cut, CTL + x. It cut the picture alright, but still wouldn't paste, even trying the keyboard shortcut for paste, which is Ctl + V. . Still no luck.
Fireguy said, "Well, it works on my computer".
I thought it might be some of my browser settings, but couldn't fix it. We saved what we had as a draft.
Our next step: We opened my site on Fireguy's computer and tried to edit it there. It worked perfectly. So now, if I want to publish a blog needing any image placement changes, I have to do it on fireguy's computer.
Woe is me!!

Truck Driver

Big shot truck driver strolling down 7th Avenue, Calgary sometime in 1940.
